Many kinds of cancer are treatable, but unfortunately some are not. Besides medication you can always ease the symptoms with other alternative rehabilitations. Practising yoga is one therapy that can be done anytime and anywhere either sitting, standning or laying.<br /><br />Please enjoy today´s guest blogger, <span style="font-style: italic;">Krista Peterson</span>. She is passionate about the health of individuals and the benefits of yoga in cancer patients. <br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><p style="margin-bottom: 0cm"><u>Yoga becoming popular among cancer patients</u></p> <p style="margin-bottom: 0cm">For many cancer patients, finding some time of peace and calm can be extremely difficult. A routine of treatments, therapy, and constant visits from multiple physicians can take even more of a toll on patients than the normal rigors of a terminal illness. In recent times, there’s been a growing use of complementary and alternative medicine (<span style="color:#0000ff;"><u><a class="western" href="http://nccam.nih.gov/health/whatiscam/">CAM</a></u></span>) for cancer patients. With this growing use of complementary treatments, yoga has quickly become one of the most popular options in alternative therapies for these patients. </p> <p style="margin-bottom: 0cm">Along with meditation, yoga provides these cancer patients with the opportunity for that rare time of silence and relaxation. It’s in this time that major mental and physical healing can occur. Essentially as a way to quiet the mind and open up the body to movement, allows these patients to reduce stress and also allow the body to become less tense and more flexible. </p> <p style="margin-bottom: 0cm">The ability to have an effect on both the mental and physical state of a patient is one of the reasons that yoga has gained such popularity as a <span style="color:#0000ff;"><u><a class="western" href="http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/cam">complementary treatment option</a></u></span>. For many of these cancer patients, their body can be beaten and heavily affected not only from the diseases they’ve endured, but also in many side effects from their routine treatment such as chemotherapy. The ability to take on yoga will help in the body’s flexibility and in turn, relieving some of the physical issues that may come up as a side effect of normal treatment. </p> <p style="margin-bottom: 0cm">For many patients and survivors, the proof is in their stories. One great example involves <span style="color:#0000ff;"><u><a class="western" href="http://mesotheliomasymptoms.com/">mesothelioma</a></u></span> survivor Paul Kraus. Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that invades the lining of the organs in the chest and abdomen area as a result of asbestos exposure. Following his diagnosis in 1997 Kraus implemented an alternative treatment plan that included a rigorous diet, exercise, and mind clearing therapies such as yoga and meditation. He used this plan to outlive what was expected by nearly 14 years, into 2011 and still living. This is particularly impressive considering average <span style="color:#0000ff;"><u><a class="western" href="http://www.mesotheliomasymptoms.com/mesothelioma-life-expectancy">mesothelioma life expectancy</a></u></span> is between eight and 14 months on average. </p> <p style="margin-bottom: 0cm">Certainly there are a number of other success stories out there with the use of yoga as a complementary and alternative medicine for cancer patients. Its ability to allow time to clear the mind and affect the mental state positively, as well as the physical state will continue to make it an even more popular therapy option for patients with cancer and terminal illness. </p>Suehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15215511625157193669noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6181191522595079828.post-83111007774939911652011-04-12T00:57:00.000-07:002011-04-12T04:20:14.419-07:00Sakura Yoga<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: rgb(255, 102, 102);font-size:130%;" ><span style="font-weight: bold;">I want freedom in my life, not freedom from it.</span></span><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">-Judith Hanson Lasater</span><br /></div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ9prrxpf3pfIprc8UuicZwnzI-0Akg9lyS3VA0DHRKYNrH6A5Rv3V39byl-YdTKK4zZoUWVatv0kZaPEprNUwZ891_wirtp03tPigVcPFF3NOu-1EgKMxFcpJcR5nX-W23w6t6JmG5lBn/s1600/Sakura2+135.JPG"><img style="float: left; margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ9prrxpf3pfIprc8UuicZwnzI-0Akg9lyS3VA0DHRKYNrH6A5Rv3V39byl-YdTKK4zZoUWVatv0kZaPEprNUwZ891_wirtp03tPigVcPFF3NOu-1EgKMxFcpJcR5nX-W23w6t6JmG5lBn/s320/Sakura2+135.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5594613637083373202" border="0" /></a>Yoga has many benefits. One of the best things is that you can do it everywhere. No extra accessories. Our hearts are broken.<br /><br />The Finnish government and therefore also my husband's company have ordered us to pack our most important belongings and leave Japan.<br /><br />Tomorrow Japan Airlines takes us and our Finnish guests to Thailand, Bangkok. On the 18th of March Finnair will bring us back to Helsinki.<br /><br />Life is precious. I love Japan, but never thought to be forced to leave this country like this. And as it looks we don't even know if we will return. The priority is to get out of the country as soon as possible.<br /><br />To all the lovely people that I and my family have met during our stay in Japan I say; <span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 0);font-size:180%;" ><span style="font-weight: bold;">Sayonara, I love you all. </span></span><br />I wish I could hug you one more time.<br />You are great!<br /><br />Lots of love,<br />Susanne, Mårten, Ellinor and CeciliaSuehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15215511625157193669noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6181191522595079828.post-81155837104032500562011-03-05T03:29:00.000-08:002011-03-05T17:26:46.969-08:00Kapha meditation<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: rgb(0, 51, 51);font-size:180%;" ><span style="font-weight: bold;">Do what you can,<br />with what you have,<br />where you are.</span></span> <span style="color: rgb(0, 51, 51);font-size:180%;" ><span style="font-size:85%;"><br />-Theodore Roosevelt</span></span><br /></div><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5a95wzh42YOne2Geumlze9PXDv-XsW6JpEjNq3QcKxGZwNSUvJiLSRjUyr4LjXK7gputhDnn2KgyWN7f1qVWU0iiQWJTBUIgSQ0F2-ir1wZAAzwAzHTqWoyotykfGVTf2Q7euY18sFIb-/s1600/elefant.jpg"><img style="float: left; margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5a95wzh42YOne2Geumlze9PXDv-XsW6JpEjNq3QcKxGZwNSUvJiLSRjUyr4LjXK7gputhDnn2KgyWN7f1qVWU0iiQWJTBUIgSQ0F2-ir1wZAAzwAzHTqWoyotykfGVTf2Q7euY18sFIb-/s320/elefant.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5580566314938605938" border="0" /></a>Feeling like you want to snooze because of the heaviness in your body and mind?<br /><br />During the Kapha season you need to get the slow and stable elephant moving. Faced towards <span style="font-style: italic;">Mount Tomamu </span>in Hokkaido gave me a spectacular view. A reminder of how we need to bring the steadyness of a mountain into our daily life. Solid as a rock, no matter of the circumstances around you.<br /><br />After a day out in the slopes it was time to withdraw and meditate on the windowsill with a nice cup of japanese green tea, <span style="font-style: italic;">sencha</span>. <br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4BtvfHUJ6eQRtfRH_zNPCAehUyC7u8j16OEnpmCjd86-xWTKrqVqt8E3dosSHUUAAFQBIsf2mWrBzhmSdOf39teuRkN4RZh4BNq7TX3Rrw2jKF9A0qtixsn6FcpHz6h6LaWk5FlE4bU3m/s1600/tr%25C3%25A4d.JPG"><img style="float: left; margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4BtvfHUJ6eQRtfRH_zNPCAehUyC7u8j16OEnpmCjd86-xWTKrqVqt8E3dosSHUUAAFQBIsf2mWrBzhmSdOf39teuRkN4RZh4BNq7TX3Rrw2jKF9A0qtixsn6FcpHz6h6LaWk5FlE4bU3m/s320/tr%25C3%25A4d.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5573866174800337970" border="0" /></a>I fixed my gaze on one particular spurce. In <span style="font-style: italic;">yin yoga</span> we use our bodies like swans. Connecting with the earth and gracefully moving from one pose to the other with a magnificent elegance. The disturbance started as I got unregular sleeping patterns from breast feeding my two daughters. The doctor told me:<span style="font-style: italic;"> insomnia isn´t lethal</span>. That wasn´t much comfort at the time. Seen through the eyes of the exhausted, life is pale and weak. Instead of sleeping pills, yoga was the best medicine for me to get back into a regular sleeping routine. Not a quick fix, but a stable fix.<br /><br />Sleep is a necessary source of nourishment for the physiology. Proper sleep is a prerequisite for success in all areas of life. Without mental energy, creativity is blocked.<br /><br />Our pituitary gland produces growth hormone. For kids this hormone promotes growth and development and for adults it maintains our vitality. As you sleep the brain relaxes and generates new thoughts. The brain directs the body to heal and repair itself and restore chemical balance. Sleep provides the mental clarity to develop self-awareness.<br /><br />Ayurveda science agrees that going to bed 10 p.m is optimal. This is when melatonin, rest and nest, rises. We need one hour of sleep for every two hours we are awake. Every day, not only during weekends!<br /><br />P.S In the picture is a japanese style power nap, not a past out drunk.Suehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15215511625157193669noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6181191522595079828.post-52506280318835464902011-01-19T03:52:00.001-08:002011-01-19T04:36:25.401-08:00Headstrong moon<div style="text-align: center; font-weight: bold;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;font-size:100%;color:#800080;">One moon shows in every pool;<br />in every pool, the one moon.<br /><span style="font-weight: normal;font-size:85%;" >- Zen Forest Saying</span></span><br /><br /></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRKQo1GYjBXscmi1BScWNEfOX0XXbMkhKu68Ve8I4yB5K7JWyB38hfXLZn4SvUI6s1b4A95xCW_-i2DX36KoAlXdqKqBbPxLvbI_pUntzY4JOvaoX4sCTTkutydniSk9fD9qmMEnB9wAhD/s1600/head.JPG"><img style="float: left; margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRKQo1GYjBXscmi1BScWNEfOX0XXbMkhKu68Ve8I4yB5K7JWyB38hfXLZn4SvUI6s1b4A95xCW_-i2DX36KoAlXdqKqBbPxLvbI_pUntzY4JOvaoX4sCTTkutydniSk9fD9qmMEnB9wAhD/s320/head.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5563869439521108098" border="0" /></a>On the Full moon, the body is full of ungrounded energy which creates physical instability. According to the <span style="font-style: italic;">Upanishads</span> the main prana lives in the head. During the full moon we tend to be more headstrong. The human body, similar to our planet, is affected by the gravitational pull of both the moon and the sun.<br />According to the Ashtanga Yoga system, one should not practice on those days, as the body is more vulnerable to injury - either through tiredness/lack of energy or too much of it and a risk of over-exertion.<p style="text-align: justify;">In other forms of yoga, moon days are not always respected but usually acknowledged as times of fluctuating energy, unsettled moods and hence not ideal for strong physical practices.<br /></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuOGF_dQDwioEzJZaaHO4zGtKUuWq0wZIb_CUes8dNtUzUWDVfw6qdAl9nRuu7EH3XCt-7wwXxmMPPLilkvWlV95DYSseiEXn6BfixrIEMPpWf5yvxzh8g_4T_sWJCnTccwRhGD62AugB_/s1600/chair.JPG"><img style="float: left; margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuOGF_dQDwioEzJZaaHO4zGtKUuWq0wZIb_CUes8dNtUzUWDVfw6qdAl9nRuu7EH3XCt-7wwXxmMPPLilkvWlV95DYSseiEXn6BfixrIEMPpWf5yvxzh8g_4T_sWJCnTccwRhGD62AugB_/s320/chair.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5563866276271337010" border="0" /></a></p><p style="text-align: justify;">I myself did my usual morning practice, a gentle one. One roundabout is food cravings. And what do we eat when those cravings hit? <span style="font-style: italic;">Chocolate, sweets and chips.</span> You never find anything nutritious on the PMS-list.<br /><br />Most women with PMS experience a drop in serotonin levels, which triggers cravings for carbs because the body uses carbs to make serotonin. If cortisol is high and serotonin is low, you'll seek carbs and fats. Simple sugars are metabolized more quickly than complex carbs, so they offer a quick serotonin fix.<br /><br />Have you also noticed that you are hungry, edgy and irritable within an hour or two after a meal? Then it is the hypoglycemia, <span style="font-style: italic;">low blood sugar</span>, which usually is the strongest during the second half of the menstrual cycle.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-xTVftTHVgWFxxErAZCzUHqesWGW85yPJ9Wd0jVamgEW9Wpyp5C0z-9jv4meFhw0YBx8AWtxil9JmWyPShchCbmci83XsTV6DpKFqx3lruRFqc8jXBGtrLMjFwKnWEGSv14sJmbP5Jqiq/s1600/russin.jpg"><img style="float: left; margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-xTVftTHVgWFxxErAZCzUHqesWGW85yPJ9Wd0jVamgEW9Wpyp5C0z-9jv4meFhw0YBx8AWtxil9JmWyPShchCbmci83XsTV6DpKFqx3lruRFqc8jXBGtrLMjFwKnWEGSv14sJmbP5Jqiq/s320/russin.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5562752225743904386" border="0" /></a><br />To make the PMS more enjoyable I recommend you the following medicin; <span style="font-weight: bold;">Raisin Nut Balls</span>.
